Yorkshire Festival issues call for cyclists

Cycling and the arts combine to celebrate the 100 days before the Tour de France Grand Depart

Cyclists are being urged to come forward and join the Yorkshire Festival 2014, a cultural celebration to mark the 100 days before the Tour de France Grand Depart.

With a huge variety of cycling-inspired arts events lined up for the event, which runs from Thursday March 27 to Sunday 6 July, cycling fans are being invited to come along or take part in the festivities.

Such activities include Ghost Peloton, a performance by Phoenix Dance Theatre & NVA in partnership with Sustrans, which is looking for 50 experienced cyclists for two live performances in Leeds.

Participants would be required to don specially-designed, programmed light suits and ride in formation to create choreographed patterns.

A conductor’s baton, in yellow naturally, will also be passed – Olympic torch relay style – to brass bands performing in the ‘Tour de Brass’ concerts, with some locations hillier than others.

Cyclists are also encouraged to share their biking experiences for Bike Story – which will be used to form the basis of a play touring Yorkshire – and photos for an exhibition at Leeds City Museum entitled Bicyclism.

The Tour de Force Bicycle Orchestra is also requesting donations of old bikes and parts for use as instruments.

Rollapaluza competitions and cinema showings – including outdoor screenings, for cyclists to attend on two wheels, are also set to be organised throughout the Yorkshire Festival.

Executive producer Henrietta Duckworth said of the Festival: “It is a brilliant celebration of culture and cycling happening indoors and outdoors in all parts of the county.

“The activities will appeal to riders of all ages and abilities so if you’re already a cyclist, take part and get involved.

“If you’re inspired by the Grand Départ coming to Yorkshire but don’t already ride, come along to experience everything cycling and the Festival has to offer.”
