We teamed up with Bike Breaks: Girona Cycle Centre to offer free entry to the event and discounted accommodation to two people able to answer a simple question about Girona resident, Dan Martin (Garmin-Sharp).
The Birmingham-born Irishman won a hugely prestigious Monument Classic last year, but with five to choose from, which to select?
Justin and Cindy were among a host of entrants who responded with the correct answer – Liege-Bastogne-Liege.
The event
If you weren’t among our lucky winners, but still want to sample the exquisite delights of Girona’s mediaeval city centre, its sun-kissed climate, and, of course, its soaring roads, then entry to the Gran Fondo remains open.
The 125km event, which includes 2,000m of climbing, will be the climax of a week of cycling activities organised by Bike Breaks: Girona Cycle Centre.
‘Shop rides’ will be held each day from the centre from Monday June 16, 2014 to Saturday June 21, 2014.
On Tuesday June 17, 2014, riders will have the chance to take part in a Nocturne ride around the historic streets of Girona town centre, which will be closed to traffic for the occasion from 8pm. An “unforgettable night” is pledged by organisers.
Wednesday June 18, 2014 will see the riders head to Valley of Saint Daniel – the Vall de Sant Daniel – to experience authentic Catalan cuisine.
The meal will stand in good stead those tackling the challenging hill climb schedule for the following day. A timed ascent to the Monastery of Els Angels will be open to riders with a licence from their national federation, and with the climbing legs to tackle a 404m altitude gain in just 10.4km.
Friday June 20, 2014 has been earmarked as a recovery day, although a shop ride from Bike Breaks: Girona Cycle Centre will take place as usual. From 10pm, riders can attend a pasta party to prepare for the following day’s challenge.
Accommodation
Four star, double room accommodation with breakfast is offered at €145 to couples. Single use costs €125. Three star equivalents cost €95 for couples and €85 for single use.
