Fans favourite Jens Voigt is riding his final – and record-equaling 17th – Tour de France on this Trek Madone 7-Series.
The evergreen 42-year-old has made his name as one of the peloton’s characters both on and off the bike and began his Tour with a trademark attack from the gun on stage one, riding clear with Nicolas Edet (Cofidis) and Benoit Jarrier (Bretagne) before pushing on solo and finally being swept up by the bunch ahead of the finish in Harrogate.
The Madone is one of a trio machines available to Trek Factory Racing from the team’s title sponsor, along with the super-light Emonda, launched ahead of the Tour, and the Domane ‘endurance’ bike, and there’s a fairly even split between the three among the squad. Frank Schleck, for example, reaches for the Emonda each morning, as you expect a climber might, and Fabian Cancellara’s weapon of choice is (or was, as he retired from the race on the first rest day) the Domane.
We photographed Voigt’s Madone at the start of stage two in York, following that solo raid on stage one, and having earned the King of the Mountains jersey, a polka dot SRM Power Control 7 computer sat proudly on the German’s handlebar.
