The humble gilet is among the most useful of all cycling garments and in this instance we’re hoping it will help to prolong the use of the short-sleeved jersey into November. This offering from Conquest comes with claims for water resistance, courtesy of a coating on the outside, and a capacity to keep out the wind. We’re expecting both in the weeks ahead.
The gilet is an intrinsically uncomplicated garment, and Conquest’s offering errs on the side of simplicity. The collar is formed from the same piece of fabric as the body, for example, while most of our acquaintance use a separate panel. The “sleeves” and hem are finished with the narrowest strip of elastic. Both features are likely to make the gilet more packable, and the single, central pocket on the tail can be used for this purpose.
There’s a panel on the inside and a ‘garage’ at the collar to shield the wearer from the full-length zip; perforated and stretchable side panels, and a thin strip of reflective silver piping on either side of the shoulders, and above the rear pocket, each of which looks rather striking against the white fabric of the body. It’s sold in five sizes, from S to 2XL, and costs £52.
