Giro Air Attack and Air Attack Shield – first look

The Giro Air Attack helmet is the new offering from the American supplier to UCI WorldTour cycling teams including Garmin-Barracuda and Rabobank.

It will be in the shops next spring, but expect to see it in use during next month’s Tour de France.

The fitting system is new to Giro’s range, one they are calling Roc Loc Air. It suspends the helmet three millimeters above the rider’s head, promoting air flow through the six “wind tunnel” vents and exhaust ports.

The Giro Air Attack Shield

Two models will be available: the Air Attack and Air Attack Shield, the latter having a magnetically attached lens made by optical specialists, Carl Zeiss Vision.

Giro claim the lowest “wind-averaged” aerodynamic drag of any “road” helmet (as distinct from one designed solely for time trial use).

It will be available in three sizes (small, medium, and large), creating a range that will accommodate head circumferences of between 51cm and 63cm.

The Giro Air Attack cycling helmet

Giro claim a weight of 264 grams for a medium sized Air Attack, and 296 grams for a medium sized Air Attack Shield.

The Air Attack has a suggested retail price of 200 Euros (about £161) while the Air Attack Shield is expected to sell for 240 Euros (about £194).
