A set of light disc-brake ready wheels from a new British brand

Hunt may have only launched in 2015 but the Sussex-based firm have already turned heads, quickly expanding their range of road wheels to include the Hunt Aero Light Disc wheels here.

Hunt launched with a single disc wheelset but now have six options in the range, covering everything from carbon clinchers to winter-specific training wheels. The Aero Light Discs are, as you’ve probably guessed, pitched as an aerodynamic, lightweight wheelset for disc brake bikes. What isn’t mentioned in the name is that they’re tubeless ready, so you’re looking at a set of wheels which are right in line with a number of trends.

In reality, you’re talking about marginal gains – if any – in aerodynamic terms since although the alloy disc-specific rim has a rounded profile it’s only 28mm deep. What you’re really buying these wheels for is the weight as they’re impressively light for disc brake wheels at only 1,469g for the set.

The rim has a 17mm internal width (22mm external), which creates a fairly wide footprint suitable for a 25mm or even 28mm tyre. The wheels spin on low friction carbon hubs compatible with quick-release skewers but future proofed with the inclusion of adapters for 15mm thru axles while 9, 10 and 12mm adapters can be bought separately as well as a SRAM XD body and converters to a 142mm axle width. All bases covered, then.

Hunt also offer the hoops as a wheel and tyre package, fitted with 23, 25 or 28mm Schwalbe One Pro tubeless tyres for £99. Seeing as Schwalbe’s class-leading tubeless tyres cost £56.99 each – and you rid yourself of the potentially messy business of fitting them – that seems like a good deal to us.

However, demand often outstrips supply as far as Hunt wheels are concerned, so you’ll have to be on your toes if you want to get hold of a set.

Whether you decide to take advantage of the Aero Light Disc’s tubeless compatibility or not, all things considered these are very good value at £469. Wheels represent an obvious upgrade for many riders looking to improve on the budget set specced on many an off-the-shelf bike, but in reality few can stretch to the wheel porn served up by the likes of ENVE. These wheels show there’s still a lot to offer if you have less than £500 in your pocket and, if it makes any difference, we think the understated black and white decals look great too.
