More power from new Shimano mechanical disc caliper

30percent greater stopping power, a narrower profile and reduced weight are the key features of the new-for-2013 Shimano BR-R515 mechanical – cable pull as distinct from hydraulic operation – road disc brake caliper, which will supersede the existing BR-R505 model when it arrives in late 2012.

The new caliper, which weighs 181g, will be offered alongside a cyclo-cross-specific version, the BR-CX75, which weighs 156g and is designed for use in extreme and off-road conditions. Both models are intended to be used with standard drop handlebar-style road brake levers; mechanical mtb calipers operate via a different pull ratio and the two should not be mixed.
