We’ve just had some new 3-in-one professional products delivered. The 3-in-One brand is the most well known in the world and their ‘little can in the shed’ has been used on bike chains and lawnmowers for years. Many wheelbuilders still use it to prepare spokes and nipples as it’s light and easily worked into the threads to help prevent seizing. However it’s no chain oil, especially with the advance of brands like Finish Line, Rock ‘n Roll and Perdros, who all make excellent anti-fling lubes that don’t harm you bike or the environment. Well their latest ‘professional’ range looks to enter this ever competitive market. The full 3-in-one Professional range consists of:
• Heavy Duty Cleaner Degreaser for removing oil, dirt, tar and grime.
• Anti-Seize Copper Grease for preventing seizure from high temperature and corrosion.
• High Performance Lubricant to reduce friction and wear.
• White Lithium Grease for heavy duty applications for preventing rust and corrosion.
• Silicone Spray Lubricant a long lasting high performance lubrication that is safe on metal, wood, rubber and vinyl.
• High Performance Penetrant Spray with a fast acting formula for freeing rusted or seized fittings.
The degreaser foams up a little like bathroom cleaner and ‘does what it says on the tin’ at least it cleaned a chain quite well. On the downside it’s not biodegradeable or non-corrosive so be careful next to drains and on top of sensitive paintwork.
Not really sure that White Lithium grease is targetted at bicycle bearings either as it’s not the best stuff to use here, however the 3-IN-ONE High Performance Lubricant is greatly improved over standard WD-40 as it has PTFE added, so it will certainly be a better chain lube and they are saying that it’s safe on plastics too, as the press release states:
With an extremely high concentration of PTFE, the advanced synthetic formula provides outstanding lubrication and corrosion protection under extremes of temperature, pressure and motion thus dramatically reducing friction and so extending the life of equipment and tools. As well as providing long-lasting lubrication and corrosion protection it will also drives out moisture and is safe to use on all metal and non-metal surfaces including wood, vinyl, rubber, glass and most plastics. It can be used at operating temperatures from -45° to 235° C.
If it lives up to the press release, then it should be good…
The Lube is available in a 400ml spray can, it retails from around £6.49.
We will be testing it and let you know how it gets on.
