New Trek TT ready for Armstrong

In development replacement for Trek’s TTX time trial bike

Alberto Contador was recently spotted aboard a Trek time trial bike that bares little resemblance to the current TTX, so a new bicycle is clearly in development, further backed up by this photo of Lance Armstrong’s TT bike ahead of the 2009 Tour de France Prologue on Saturday 4 July.

Like the recently redesigned Specialized, Giant and Scott time trial bikes, Trek seems to be following the current trend for an integrated fork crown and stem which creates a fairing-style section ahead of the head tube – though we shouldn’t call it a fairing as it’s a structural element, with a hinge-style arrangement taking care of steering. This reduces the frontal area creating a bike that slices through the air more cleanly.

The bike certainly looks clean too, with no visible cables outside of the frame. A key design aspect is the concealment of the front brake caliper inside the fork, and the rear brake is located behind the bottom bracket.

There’s a specially designed stem, the top tube is straight and level from front to back, and the down tube and seat tube are hugely ovalised, as are the especially wide fork blades. The same DuoTrap – sensor that mounts inside the chainstay – as debuted on the new Madone 6 looks to be in evidence too.
