Reynolds Assault SLG Disc wheelset – first look

Disc-ready, full carbon clincher from respected American brand

Spokes

DT’s latest aero spoke, the Aero Comp, a double-butted offering, deployed here in straight-pull form, completes the picture. Reynolds have issued 24 of the aforesaid, both front and rear, and in a two-cross lacing in all positions, a notable deviation from the radial pattern typically found on both sides of a 700c front wheel and often on one side of the rear, too.

While spokes can still be accessed from the rear of the rim, the Reynolds Assault SLG Disc also allows them to be tightened from the nipple too, following a reversion to a non-recessed design on their more affordable hoops

We guess Reynolds have deployed this stronger lacing for a more robust brace against the additional forces of disc braking. Time and testing will tell the degree to which it has been a success.

We mentioned Reynolds reversion’ to a more maintenance-friendly rim-nipple interface that allows adjustment with a spoke key in our section on the Assault SLG Disc’s rims, and we’ll add here that the holes are drilled through the entirety of the rim, allowing adjustment from the rear too, should you be minded to remove tyres, tubes, and tapes.

We’ll be out and about on the Reynolds Assault SLG Disc in the weeks ahead. Check back soon for a full review.
