Panaracer Gravel King (£29.99)
The Panaracer Gravel King is a response to the burgeoning ‘gravel racing’ scene in the USA and while gravel roads are harder to come by here, it’s equally well-suited to the UK’s rough roads.
The Gravel King is described by Panaracer as a ‘go almost anywhere’ tyre and the Japanese manufacturer has sought to combine grip and durability with a healthy dose of speed, though, like most of the tyres feature here, it remains a winter/training rubber and so lacks the acceleration of a true racing tyre.
Where the Gravel King really succeeds is in its ability to handle a variety of road surfaces, whether it be broken tarmac, gravel or the odd bridleway, thanks to a grippy compound and good puncture protection. Considering the state of UK back roads in winter, that can only be a good thing.
As for weight, the Gravel King weighs a claimed 220g per 23mm tyre, which is par for the course for this type of tyre. It’s also available in 25mm and 28mm widths, which will enable you to get the most of the Gravel King’s ‘go anywhere’ characteristics.
