Okay, so it’s not just strictly a crankset upgrade, but SRAM’s new 1X system not only offers the chance to go single at the front, but also to completely change the way you ride. While it may not work for some types of riding, if you team up the right crankset with the right cassette ratio you’ll lose very little in terms of gear choices.
SRAM say the 50t version weighs in at 679g with 172.5mm crank arms, and it’s compatible with 110 and 130BCD chainrings. Plus, you can get ten or 11-speed compatible versions, too, so you don’t have to be running 11-speed if you want to go 1X.
There are a huge range of length and ratio options as well. Crank arms run from 162.5mm up to 177.5 in 2.5mm increments, and chainrings come in 38 to 50t in two-tooth jumps for the 110BCD, and 52 or 54t options for the 130.
The other bonus is it’s reasonably cheap, too, coming in at £227 for the GXP BB compatible version with a 50t chainring.
