The EX1 Zero

Trigon EX1 Zero – the lightest road bike in the World?
Trigon claim that this is the lightest road bike in World and when you pick
it up few would argue against such a claim. The carbon frame with Scandium head
tube and bottom bracket adds up to a frame weight of 900g! The bike kitted out
with Campagnolo 2007 Record and Trigon bars etc. it totals 5.91kg. To race it
you would need to stick a few bolts to the bottom bracket to bring it in line
with UCI regulation weight of 6.8kg. (Lugano Charter Feb1999)

Trigon have been making carbon delights for many top manufactures for almost
20 years and the EX1 Zero is a cool summary of their expertise. The frame is
Trigon C7 Carbon with custom weave, monocoque with rear carbon stays inserted.
The bottom ‘Mono-Box’ bottom bracket is a signature item on the bike and looks
the business. The fork is all carbon with carbon drop outs front and rear.

We took it out a for a number of laps of Hillingdon Cycle Circuit, which although
unable to give us an impression of it’s handling on rough roads or climbs, did
at least give an inkling of it’s speed. On the smooth surface it flew and you
could feel each pedal stroke having it’s effect. The bike also behaved impeccable
on the turns and stayed on the lines you wished.

I remember riding at Crystal Palace many years ago when alloy/carbon bikes
were first really being used in earnest. On the rough bottom bend you could
riders having to fight their bucking bikes whilst I could ride through the potholes
care free on my steel SLX Eddy Merckx. I got the impression that the EX1 would
not need be tamed rather the level of the skill of the rider would be reached
first before the bike shouted ‘surrender’. We would ride it any race or cyclo-sportif.

The finishing kit features Trigon one piece carbon bars and stem, carbon seat
post and a very scary saddle that in fact turned out to be rather comfy. (There
is a choice of pad thickness)

The American Classic Carbon wheels are just so light, that a measure of faith
might be required by non carbon fans. Founded 25 years ago, American Classic
began by offering super light weight bottle cages and now produce trick road,
track and mountain bike wheels in carbon, aluminum and magnesium. The EX1 Zero
we tried had a pair of Carbon AM’s weighing in at just 1,75kg for the pair.
