It’s important to properly understand the weather conditions in order to gauge what clothing you need to wear.
It’s a bit of a ritual of mine, and my girlfriend laughs when I do it, but I open the window and wave my hand about to get an idea of what the chill feels like.
I used to have a thermometer by my front door which I’d check manually and I’d also check the forecast temperature, using all three to make sure I had the right kit. I used to do that every day, to the point where if I put my hand out of the window I could tell you within a degree or two what the temperature is. I used to play a bit of a game with myself to see if I could guess the temperature accurately.
The moral of the story is that you become better at understanding how to dress for different weather conditions with experience but it’s also important to check the forecast to give yourself the best chance. Check if there are going to be any showers and dress appropriately. How much wind is there? If there’s a lot of wind then there’s a higher risk of conditions changing. That’s where the emergency layer comes in.
