Stay fueled
At this time of year, when it’s particularly cold, our ability to generate the heat required to maintain the right temperature for what you’re wearing, is dependent on having the energy to ride at a sustained intensity.
If you go out and you blow with an hour to go on a four or five hour ride, then clearly you’re then on ‘get home mode’, which is not the same intensity as what you’ve been riding at to stay warm until that point.
I’ve done that a few times and learnt from experience. You may go out and feel brilliant for most of a ride and then you start to blow because you haven’t taken on enough food. It’s not funny and it really hurts.
If that does happen then that’s where the extra layer comes into play once again, but also make sure you start a ride with the supplies – plenty of food and enough money – to see you through to the end.
