Cyclist strength training: developing strength out of the saddle

Drills and technique to improve standing climbing

Building volume progressively to avoid injury

It is worth recognising that this type of training on the bike is the most demanding on your core and muscular systems. The more work you have been doing off the bike over the winter in these areas, the easier it will be for you to introduce this work gradually without having any problems.

Core strength exercises lay an essential foundation to on-the-bike honing of technique. Think of the latter as the icing on the cake

If you introduce too much out of the saddle loading too soon, you may run into problems through lack of conditioning. Remember this type of work is ‘icing on the cake’, and if you haven’t been busy baking this winter be careful how much of it you include in your training.
