How to: Elinor Barker’s track cycling tips

Team pursuit world champion shares advice on getting started, training and stepping it up

I think track cycling is a little more accessible than it is has been in the past, because you can go to any track and hire a bike quite cheaply. They’re not as expensive as they used to be, so it’s the best time ever to get involved with it, really. You can borrow anything – helmets, shoes, kit, gloves – anything you need, so you don’t need to buy anything at all.

I would say if you are going to start riding a fixed gear bike make sure you have briefed yourself and know how to get started . You need to know you can’t freewheel and know how to slow down – that sort of thing. But it’s pretty simple really – you literally just keep pedalling!
