How To

Twelve ways to maintain motivation this winter

How to keep riding through winter

Head indoors (turbo trainer/track)

Can’t face the weather? The turbo is a ‘popular’ alternative. A turbo trainer allows you to get in quality training from the ‘comfort’ of your home – or garage. Sessions should be short and sharp – to keep you sane and to work on top-end fitness.

A turbo club brings the camaraderie of a club run indoors

Some cycling clubs run a weekly turbo session, where riders come together to complete a specific workout. Like the weekend club run, the camaraderie helps in getting you on the turbo in the first place, and you can push each other on more than would be the case if riding solo. If you don’t have a turbo club, start one, and if you’re not a member of a cycling club, then gather a few mates for the same effect.

Winter is also a good time to head indoors and onto the track. Manchester, Newport and Calshot all have indoor velodromes that host taster sessions, and local track leagues are the stage for your first competitive foray into track racing. London’s Lee Valley VeloPark is also set to open on March 4.
