We wouldn’t advocate stepping away from the bike for too long – there’s plenty to keep you motivated through winter – but don’t overdo it. If your body is telling you that you need a rest then listen to it, and consider building an easy week into your training once a month. Rest, recover and eat well. Mike Cotty shared his top tips for recovery in the summer and many of the same principles apply in the off-season.

Above all, enjoy yourself, because that’s what cycling’s all about, right?
