Mark Cavendish dominated the headlines last year – and looks set to do the same in 2012.
His 2011 season, was, even by his standards, exceptional – green jersey winner at the Tour De France, victory in the London-Surrey Classic Olympic test event, and the pinnacle (so far – London is calling) of a stellar career, with victory at the world road race championships. The athlete who has everything then received the perfect pre-Christmas gift from an admiring British public – the BBC Sports Personality of the Year.
The Manx Missile is far from one to rest on his laurels. Having joined Team Sky at the end of 2011, Cav has been putting in the miles with his new team mates in Mallorca, perfecting the sprint train he hopes will deliver him to still more emphatic victories. A repeat of his 2009 win at Milan-San Remo has already been targeted, this year in the rainbow stripes of world champion. And we know what’s on his to do list this summer…
Here’s a video of Cavendish in training with his new Team Sky colleagues. Capturing a mixture of his trademark to-camera honesty and blistering on-the-bike pace, it’s a timely reminder of what the world’s best sprinters will have to contend with in 2012, starting at the Tour of Quatar on Sunday. Enjoy….
