Amazingly, there are cyclists who actually like hills. No, really; like them rather than simply accepting that they are an integral part of the great sport and pastime of road cycling.
Occasional cycling journalistand hill climb competitor Simon Warren is one such. He is “known” to the reviewer and is notorious for his enthusiasm for riding uphill. Anything from the Alpine climbs of the Marmotte cyclosportive to the short, sharp ramps of the Surrey Hills gets the Warren thumbs up and there can be few British cyclists better qualified to select to guide the reader over a round one hundred of the best climbs in the country.
The collection includes many of the most famous ascents Britain has to offer, from the leg-draining mountain roads of Wales, Scotland and the north of England to the shorter, homelier and yet often just as challenging, fact file and map, most have a profile and there’s a chart at the back to help the collector list climbs “bagged”.
Small enough to be carried on a ride and light enough not to add too much difficulty to any of the beastly hills listed, 100 Greatest Climbs will be a welcome addition to any cyclist’s library. Or maybe not…
