PRO components are used by several of the leading professional race teams, including Rabobank, HTC-Columbia and Sky and have a fine reputation for durability. Looking at the latest bar and stem combo from the Netherlands-based company, it’s not too hard to see why.
Both handlebars and stem are constructed using a combination of carbon-fibre and aluminium, the former forming a skin bonded to the net-forged basic shape of the latter. The result combines the stiffness of the carbon skin with the ease of shaping and thread location of the latter and is well-proven several years after its original introduction.
In the case of the stem, the weight of the finished article starts at an impressive 120g for the 80mm length model. Other lengths are 90mm through to 140mm in 10mm increments. Steerer clamp diameter is 1 1/8″ and the stem fits handlebars with a 31.8mm centre bulge diameter. The stem has a 10degree rise, is decorated with decals suitable for use when flipped and has a 3K twill carbon weave finish.
The same carbon/aluminium construction is used for the handlebars, with weight a claimed 290g for the narrower of the two widths on offer. While a little more than that of most carbon bars, it is reflected in the sturdy feel they convey and we’d expect them to be more durable and impact resistant than an all-carbon bar.
Offered in anatomic bend only and in 42cm and 44cm widths, they are measured centre to centre making the 44cm bars the equivalent of 46cm bars measured outside to outside. Bulge diameter is 31.8mm and the bars have a gloss black finish fading into carbon twill towards the middle.
