Mavic, best known as a wheel manufacturer, have launched an all-new range of road helmets at Eurobike, the world’s biggest cycling trade show.
There are three lids in the initial collection: the top-of-the-range Plasma SLR, the Plasma and the Synchro.
The helmets have been unveiled after three years of research and development which a 25,000 participant ‘head shape study’. Rather than obsessing on developing the lightest lids on the market – each weighs around 300g – the French manufacturer has instead focussed on fit and comfort.
The three buzz words to emerge from Mavic’s presentation were Ergohold, Ergofit and Ergoshape. Ergohold is Mavic’s retention system, which allows for six centimetres of adjustment, while Ergofit refers to each helmet’s one-piece padding and Ergoshape underlines Mavic’s belief that they’ve produced a range of helmets, each available in small, medium or large, that will suit almost any head shape.
The Plasma SLR, which has a carbon fibre skeleton and X-Static anti-microbial padding, will retail in the US from $225 and will be available in black or yellow/black.
The $180 Plasma looks almost identical to the SLR but is manufactured using an aluminium skeleton and, unlike the SLR, doesn’t come with a travel storage bag. It will come in black/silver, white/silver or white/black
Finally, the $125 ‘entry-level’ Synchro, which will be available in white/black, black/red or dark silver, comes without an internal skeleton, making for a bulkier helmet with less vents.
UK prices are yet to be confirmed.
