T-Mobile scored a superb one-two in Gent Wevelgem, with 23 year-old Marcus Burghardt taking top spot on the podium and Brit Roger Hammond second place. The race got off to a super-fast start, covering 49km in the first hour. Hammond was part of an early break with French Champion Florent Brard (Caisse d’Epargne) and Christophe Mengin (FdJ), which stayed away until some 26km to go, when Francisco Ventoso (Saunier Duval), Burghardt and Oscar Friere (Rabobank) bridged across from a chasing group. At 16km from the finish, the break had around 30s on the peloton. Brard was dropped, leaving Hammond ideally positioned to protect Burghardt’s winning attack in the last kilometre. Sat on Friere’s wheel, Hammond was able to outsprint the three-times world champion and recent Milan-San Remo winner and lay down a marker for this weekend’s Paris-Roubaix.
