Previous yellow jersey wearer, Christophe Moreau failed to hold onto the lead after the 40.7km time trial around Anneyron. Alexander Vinokourov ( Astana), hotly tipped for the podium in the Tour de France, rode strongly to beat of Andrey Kashechkin (Astana) and David Zabriskie (Team CSC).
Brit David Millar finished 10th while Prologue winner Bradley Wiggins finished outside the top ten.
