Flip-Thread chuck in action…, |
Lezyne Classic Floor Drive pump £44.99
Four models make up the Floor Drive range of track pumps from Lezyne: CNC, Alloy, Steel and the Classic tested here. It sits at third price point above the Steel and boasts a wooden handle, self-coloured aluminium foot and, like the £34.99 Steel floor Drive, will get a tyre to 160psi. The top two models will both reach 220psi.
The Classic shares with the top two pumps Lezyne’s aluminium Flip-Thread chuck, which works with both Presta and Schrader valves thanks to the – er – flip-thread chuck. This has Schrader- and Presta-threaded ends and works much as you might imagine. In either mode it threads onto the valve core, relying on a small captive O ring to provide an air-tight seal. The part permanently attached to the hose has an air-tight rotating coupling that allows the chuck to be threaded to the valve without twisting the hose.
stowed away… |
… and split |
Initially the tester found the system slightly slow and cumbersome in comparison to a conventional chuck with locking lever as used on the Steel FD model, especially when removing the chuck. With practice, however, it becomes apparent that this is a much better way of doing things. Not only does it provide a perfect seal every time, but there is next to no chance of bending the little Presta toggle screw core. Removal feels stiff until you learn to turn the chuck enough to allow air compressed in the hose to escape, at which point the chuck unscrews easily.
The Flip-Thread chuck is also designed to stow away in a clasp formed as an integral part of the foot, relying on the elasticity of the 47 inch long rubber hose to keep it in place while at the same time securing the handle. The barrel and piston are in steel, saving weight and maximising longevity without obviously compromising on aesthetics. The foot is effectively a tripod, ensuring a good degree of stability on uneven surfaces. Four rubber buttons on the underside prevent marking of soft floors.
Gauge is clear and well-mounted |
Long hose goes around corners |
Last but not least, the gauge is large, easy to read and, thanks to its location integrated into the foot casting, likely to be as long lasting as any. Is there a flaw? Not as of now, but we’ll let you know if one turns up.
Verdict
