First look? These things came out way back in, well, 1990; hence the label. This is a re-creation, a welcome re-manufacture by Selle Italia of one of the great designs in the history of bicycle saddles.
Nothing quite like it hade been seen previously; the Flite, with severely cut back sides and titanium rails, looked fast – or, rather, it made any bike, road or mtb, it graced look fast.
Weighing in at a scant 200g, it won admirers as much for its impressive comfort as for its more obvious attractions. Viewed in plan, it is surprisingly wide, the broad delta of the mid-to-rear section offering plenty of support. And, unlike many more recent designs, its nose retains deep sides that help avoid chafing between the thighs.
This modern version looks indistinguishable from the original and boasts a sturdy leather cover over differentiated thickness padding. According to Selle Italia, weight is up to a still-impressive 220g and there’s just the one colour option; black. Anyone looking for a saddle for that old ’90s classic languishing in the shed need look no further. More to the point, here’s a great saddle even by modern standards.
Ride impression soon.
