Shimano Alfine goes electronic

Shimano’s high-end Alfine 11-speed hub gear will get Di2 Digital Integrated Intelligence electronic shifting for 2013, adding the benefits, already proven on Shimano’s Dura-Ace and Ultegra Di2 groups, of easy fingertip shifting and sealed, weatherproof control operation to the hub’s existing advantages of durability, low maintenance and uncluttered looks.

The system comprises a motor unit that attaches to the outside in the hub, a switch unit sited on the handlebar next to the brake lever and a small display module that indicates battery charge and which of the 11 gear ratios is engaged.

Adding still more to the flexibility of the Alfine hub, Shimano has developed a dedicated dual-control brake lever using Di2 technology, allowing the user to ride a drop handlebar road bike with electronic shifting of gears that are enclosed in a hub.
