The traditional season-ending road race, the Giro di Lombardia took place last weekend and was won by Belgian Philippe Gilbert, marking four consecutive victories for a rider who is displaying some incredible end of season form.
The decisive split was instrumented by Gilbert on the final climb, the San Fermo Della Battaglia, and only Samuel Sanchez could stay with the Silence-Lotto rider. Coming into the final kilometre with a slim lead, the pair left their moves until the last possible moment but in the end Gilbert easily outsprinted the Olympic road champion in the final couple of metres, with the peloton literally breathing down their necks.
Breathtaking stuff.
