Tour de France 2016: Mont Ventoux chaos – rider reaction

The peloton has their say after yellow jersey Chris Froome runs up Mont Ventoux after crash

Chaos, confusion, anger… and the yellow jersey running up Mont Ventoux sans bike in his cleats… stage 12 of the 2016 Tour de France was always going to be memorable but nobody could have predicted how the final kilometres would play out.

Roadside fans, crowding onto the route, caused mayhem and led to Richie Porte, Chris Froome and Bauke Mollema crashing into the back of a TV moto on the ascent.

With Porte and Froome suffering damage to their bike, Mollema was able to remount and went full gas to the finish – luckily for all three, as it turned out, as race commissaires awarded Porte and Froome the same time as the Dutchman, to leave the Team Sky man in yellow.

But not before the defending champion had abandoned his bike on the roadside and run part of the way up Mont Ventoux.

Unsurprisingly, there were plenty of riders lining up to have their say after the stage. We’ve rounded up some of the best Twitter reaction to a dramatic day at the Tour de France below.
