Tour of Oman 2014: stage one – five observations

Andre Greipel moves into an early lead as Omega Pharma-Quickstep miss out

The Tour of Oman rolled out for its fifth edition, with Andre Greipel (Lotto-Belisol) powering to his fourth victory of the season in Naseem Garden.

His win – having bounced back from a scare in the crosswinds and then being boxed in during the final run-in – once again highlighted the phenomenal talent of the Lotto-Belisol team.

Despite the crosswinds there were no major losers in terms of the GC though – although the old adage of ‘you can’t win the race on stage one, but you can certainly lose it’ almost rang true as Joaquim Rodriguez (Katusha) momentarily found himself in a trailing group.
