UCI Track World Championships 2014: five observations

Women on right track as men falter in Cali

Becky James earned two more medals in the women’s sprint events – both bronze on this occasion – but where the Welsh wonder burst onto the scene in 2013, with individual sprint and keirin gold, this time it was the turn of Germany’s Kristina Vogel to take all the plaudits.

The German, who won Olympic team sprint gold with Miriam Welte at London 2012, has continued to go from strength to strength this year. James had no answer to her during the World Cup rounds and that continued to be the case in Cali.

Vogel, a part-time police officer, remains the rider to beat if James wishes to add Olympic medals to the six she now holds from the last two World Championships. The Welsh rider has time to find a way to beat Vogel but it will take something special to deny the all-conquering German on this season’s form.
