Being no stranger to the breakaway, it is hardly surprising to hear Lieuwe Westra (Astana) was bitterly disappointed neither he, nor any of his team-mates, had managed to play a part in the race-winning attack of stage six.
While compatriot Stef Clement (Belkin Pro Cycling) sealed stage victory, Westra was forced to contemplate what might have been. But the Dutchman did not have to wait too long to remind us what he too can do.
Attacking from the flag, the Dutchman was clearly a man on a mission and proved his gritty determination by ridding himself of his 12 breakaway companions and going solo in the treacherous rain.
His time-trialling ability has already been proven by his two Dutch national titles and solid, if unspectacular, showings at the Tour de France. And he lent on all of his experience to power further ahead, lap-by-lap, on the finishing circuit. What might have been on stage six? Well, Westra proved what in emphatic style.
