Volta a Catalunya 2014: stage seven – five observations

Joaquim Rodriguez seals overall victory

Another race, another encouraging step for one of Orica-GreenEDGE’s British twins.

Adam and Simon Yates have taken to life at the Australian WorldTour form like ducks to water, not least the former who enjoyed a solid start in his maiden WorldTour race. Having already impressed at the Tour de San Luis, topping the youth classification in the process, Adam went on to finish in 22nd place at the Volta, 3’42” behind Rodriguez.

He was comfortably the best-placed Orica-GreenEDGE rider overall and one of just three to finish the race. While the team were absent of the likes of Simon Gerrans and Daryl Impey, it is another reminder of just what the 21-year-old can do.

Neither Simon or Adam announced any targets ahead of their debut professional season, with both just keen to enjoy life as a neo pro and grow as riders in process. You could forgive Adam for harbouring big ambitions after his positive start to life with the Australian team, though.

Both twins are provisionally listed for the Tour of the Basque Country next month. Another good ride there, and we could be seeing far more of them as the season goes on.
