Bernard Hinault
Bernard Hinault
Bernard Hinault’s five Tour de France victories between 1978 and 1985, combined with three Giro wins and two successes at the Vuelta make him the only rider to have won all three Grand Tours on multiple occasions.
The French hardman only has the lone Paris-Roubaix victory to his name however, won in 1981 ahead of race legends Roger de Vlaeminck and Francesco Moser.
After his attempted break in the final ten kilometres was reeled in by de Vlaeminck’s lieutenant Hennie Kuiper, Hinault recovered to take control of the sprint with one lap to go and launched a long sprint to become the first Frenchman to win the race for 25 years.
Not a fan of Paris-Roubaix however, he brandished the race as ‘stupid’ after winning. Nevertheless, wearing the rainbow jersey for the only time in his career, Hinault’s year as World Champion also included victories in the Amstel Gold Race, Criterium du Dauphine and the Tour.
