Sir Bradley Wiggins?
Sir Bradley Wiggins?
And so to Wiggins. Can the 34-year-old bring down the curtain on his Team Sky career with victory on Sunday to add his name to the list of legends?
Wiggins has made a habit of setting his mind to a goal and achieving it, even if few would have expected his Tour de France victory in 2012 to be the last time he completed a Grand Tour. Indeed, hasn’t not even started one since crashing out of the 2013 Giro d’Italia.
Injury, loss of form and his public falling out with Chris Froome have all contributed to Wiggins losing his status as Team Sky’s leading GC man, but Paris-Roubaix look to have given him a new lease of life in the closing stages of his career with Sky.
Last year’s top-ten finish proved Wiggins has what it takes to succeed on the pavé but, having failed to follow Niki Terpstra’s winning attack, you can bet your life he won’t die wondering ‘what if’ if he finds himself in the front group again this year.
Departing Team Sky in a blaze of glory would be a fitting end to Wiggins’ enigmatic career, but there are plenty of big-name riders in seriously good form out to stop him. Watch this space!
