Having revamped the rules of the hour record in May, the UCI have been had the exact response they hoped for – with a host of attempts on the mark being announced.
After first Jens Voigt and then Matthias Brandle broke the men’s record in the latter half of this year, Dame Sarah Storey has announced she is to take on the women’s record at Revolution in London in February.
And male challengers to two-time Tour of Britain stage winner Brandle’s benchmark are also coming thick and fast with Jack Bobridge, Rohan Dennis and Alex Dowsett all announcing attempts.
Rumours have flown around since Fabian Cancellara first announced his intention to tackle the hour – an attempt which has since been shelved after the UCI rule changes – of riders who could take on the prestigious challenge.
It means 2015 could see a whole host of riders hit the boards and push the current mark of 51.852km, set by Brandle in October, to the 52km barrier and beyond.
But who is capable of taking on the record, and which men are likely to join Bobridge, Dennis and Dowsett in throwing their hats into the ring?
We’ve rounded up eight of the contenders who have either confirmed an attempt or would be a serious candidate if they chose to. Add your own in the comments below or on the forum.
