Tour of Britain 2014: stage five – photo gallery

Michal Kwiatkowski defends yellow jersey as break succeeds in Devon

After a stunning summit finish atop Haytor last year, the Tour of Britain’s return to the iconic climb was a much more subdued affair this time out.

Stage five, from Exmouth to Exeter, still provided plenty of enthralling racing, however, as the break succeeded for the first time in this year’s race – with Matthias Brandle accelerating away from his former companions on the final climb.

Brandle’s IAM Cycling team have enjoyed success in the race before, not least Martin Elmiger’s second place overall last year, and the Austrian rider ensured the success story continued as he was roared down the finishing straight by the Devon crowds.
