Michal Kwiatkowski (Omega Pharma-Quickstep) continued his phenomenal start to the season by winning the prologue and taking the first yellow jersey of the 2014 Tour de Romandie.
The young Pole stormed to victory, taking more than four seconds out of his nearest challenger – Garmin-Sharp’s Rohan Dennis.
But while Omega Pharma-Quickstep’s GC contender was celebrating, there was disaster for BMC Racing’s Tejay van Garderen after he suffered a heavy crash.
The American finished more than three minutes slower than Kwiatkowski, but there were no such worries for the likes of Chris Froome (Team Sky) and Vincenzo Nibali (Astana), both of whom kept themselves well in contention overall.
