Vuelta a Espana 2014: stage ten – photo gallery

Alberto Contador storms into red jersey as Tony Martin clocks another time trial win

The first of two individual time trials on this year’s Vuelta a Espana route was always likely to shake-up the overall standings but few would have predicted how it unfolded.

Red jersey Nairo Quintana (Movistar) crashed heavily, his hopes of a second Grand Tour win of the season lying in tatters, while Alberto Contador (Tinkoff-Saxo) – just six weeks after suffering a Tour de France-ending crash – replaced him as overall leader.

Chris Froome (Team Sky) also lost time overall, as did Johan Esteban Chaves (Orica-GreenEDGE), while Rigoberto Uran (Omega Pharma-Quickstep) surged up the general classification after finishing third.

Less unexpected, however, were the performances of Uran’s team-mate, world time trial champion Tony Martin, and his chief rival against the clock, Fabian Cancellara (Trek Factory Racing).

UCI WorldTour photographer Stefano Sirotti was on hand to capture all of the action. Relive the stage in the wide-screen gallery below.
