The first of two individual time trials on this year’s Vuelta a Espana route was always likely to shake-up the overall standings but few would have predicted how it unfolded.
Red jersey Nairo Quintana (Movistar) crashed heavily, his hopes of a second Grand Tour win of the season lying in tatters, while Alberto Contador (Tinkoff-Saxo) – just six weeks after suffering a Tour de France-ending crash – replaced him as overall leader.
Chris Froome (Team Sky) also lost time overall, as did Johan Esteban Chaves (Orica-GreenEDGE), while Rigoberto Uran (Omega Pharma-Quickstep) surged up the general classification after finishing third.
Less unexpected, however, were the performances of Uran’s team-mate, world time trial champion Tony Martin, and his chief rival against the clock, Fabian Cancellara (Trek Factory Racing).
