British national women’s road race 2014: preview

High-class field set to battle Lizzie Armitstead for prestigious jersey

A big favourite for the under-23 title, former double world junior champion Lucy Garner (Giant-Shimano) has already bettered her home rivals by picking up the Best of British prize at the inaugural Women’s Tour. Finishing seventh overall, Garner enjoyed a consistent showing over the five days but has been unfortunate to miss what she had hoped would be her peak races having suffered illness immediately afterwards.

Now, however, Garner is coming back into form and has targeted a podium place at the very least. Though admitting Armitstead is favourite, and that the likes of Laws and Pooley cannot be overlooked, Garner is fast becoming a British star in her own right too and could prove as much with the national title. The 19-year-old will certainly fancy her chances if it comes to a sprint, and has also said she feels the kermesse-style finishing circuit could be to her liking, though like Armitstead she will have to do without team-mates. At the very least, her target of a podium place seems very achievable.
