Glasgow 2014: comprehensive Commonwealth Games cycling preview

The schedule, who to look out for and which Brits are gunning for Gold

The sprinting action continues on day two in the velodrome, with the men’s quarter-finals in the first session before the semi-finals and medal races in the evening.

Shane Perkins (Australia), the defending champion, misses out with injury but Olympic champion Jason Kenny (England) and World Cup medal winner Sam Webster (New Zealand) will be among the contenders hoping to take the Australian’s crown.

The men and women’s individual pursuit is also scheduled for the second day, with defending champion Jack Bobridge (Australia) returning for the men’s event.

Martyn Irvine (Northern Ireland), Marc Ryan (New Zealand) and world champion Alex Edmondson (Australia) are among the contenders, though Sir Bradley Wiggins (England) has ruled out an attempt.

In the women’s event, world champion Jo Rowsell (England) heads an elite field, which also contains rising Scottish star Katie Archibald (Scotland).

World championship bronze medallist Amy Cure (Australia) will be looking to deny the Brits, though compatriot Rebecca Wiasak – twice a medallist at last season’s World Cup – is not included.

Elinor Barker (Wales) won World Cup silver last year too, while Canada’s Laura Brown – a team pursuit silver medallist at the World Championships could also compete.

The men’s para-sport 1000m tandem time trial final will also be held on the Friday, with Olympic champion Neil Fachie (Scotland) paired with former Commonwealth Games gold medallist Craig MacLean.

Brit to watch

Katie Archibald (Scotland) – The rising star of British Cycling will be flying the flag for the home nation on track and road, and the in-form 20-year-old will be among the medal hopefuls in the individual pursuit.
