Liege-Bastogne-Liege 2016: TV schedule

Alejandro Valverde rolls out as defending champion on revamped La Doyenne route

Liege-Bastogne-Liege closes the Ardennes Classics on Sunday (April 24), with the season’s fourth Monument pitting defending champion Alejandro Valverde against a typically star-studded line-up.

Victory for Valverde, who warmed up in perfect style with his record-breaking fourth La Fleche Wallonne win, would take him level with Moreno Argentin on four wins at La Doyenne¬ – only Eddy Merckx (five) has more.

A new route is also set to shake-up the contenders – of which, Dan Martin (Etixx-QuickStep), Philippe Gilbert (BMC Racing) and Joaquim Rodriguez (Katusha) are also former winners.

The cobbled climb of the Cote de la Rue de Naniot (600m at 10.5 per cent) is new for 2016, and features just 2.5km from the finale, after the Cote de Saint-Nicolas.

The infamous Cote de Stockeu has been removed, but La Redoute remains as riders bid to join Arnaud Demare, Peter Sagan and Mat Hayman as Momument winners in 2016.
