Wout Poels (Team Sky)
A ‘hero on Alpe d’Huez’ according to his team, few will argue with how important Wout Poels was for Chris Froome at the Tour de France.
And the Dutchman’s reward could well be a shot at overall success at the Tour of Britain, after he was named in a strong six-man line-up for the race.
Peter Kennaugh could also be in the mix overall, while Ben Swift and Elia Viviani will be targeting stage wins – Classics specialists Ian Stannard and Andy Fenn complete the line-up.
Sky aren’t short of strength for the race – or options. Swift has a point to prove after crashing out of his home race, the Tour de Yorkshire, in May while Kennaugh returns to action after illness cut his Tour de France short.
As ever when racing on British roads, Team Sky won’t lack support, and a second British stage race win of the season, following Lars-Petter Nordhaug’s Tour de Yorkshire success, could well be on the cards.
