The defending champion – Dan Martin
Birmingham-born Irishman Dan Martin kick-started what became a phenomenal 2013 campaign with victory in this race last time out, becoming only the second Irishman after Sean Kelly to win the green and white jersey. His solo attack up Port Aine proved unstoppable, and was comprehensive enough to earn him the overall lead which he retained. On that occasion, the summit finish was preceded by another hors categorie climb and while no such stage is planned this time out, it proved just how good his climbing ability is.
If he is to defend his title this year however, Martin must scale similar heights. His sole outing to date was at Tirreno-Adriatico where he was never in contention during a quiet week. His target for the season is, according to reports before Christmas, the Giro d’Italia, with the Irish Grande Partenza a decisive factor. If Martin is to defend his Liege-Bastogne-Liege title as well this year, it leaves little time for more major stage racing between the Volta and the Giro so he will be keen to prove he is on top form.
