Mind the gap: Pro Continental teams on the rise

Stefano Pirazzi continues trend of success for second tier teams

Success for Darwin Atapuma at last year’s Giro d’Italia – where he earned a top 20 spot – and the Tour of Poland, a stage win and second place on another, continued a trend of Colombian success, with Team Colombia certainly not just making up the numbers when they are invited to the world stage. While Atapuma, now at BMC Racing, has graduated to pastures new, his former team-mates have set about continuing the teams’ strong showings however.

Jarlinson Pantano and Fabio Duarte have bot earned top-five placings on stage so far, while the two currently sit inside the top 20 overall. Jeffry Romero has been no stranger to the breakways meanwhile, and the team’s performances have certainly suggested several more could follow in Atapuma’s footsteps and graduate to WorldTour level next season. At the very least, they have ensured Rigoberto Uran and Nairo Quintana are not the only Colombians to have put on a good show at this year’s Giro.
