A first ever trip to Colombia for the 1995 UCI Road World Championships meant a brutal course and a race played out at high altitude.
The climb to Santa Luca – peaking at 2,900m above sea level – had to be tackled 15 times on the day and Miguel Indurain started the race as big favourite after sealing his fifth Tour de France triumph.
Spain would return with their first ever rainbow jersey, but it wasn’t on the back of Big Mig – who, after his attack was reeled in, played the role of team-mate perfectly (and selflessly).
Indurain’s team-mate Abraham Olano then attacked and the 25-year-old wasn’t to be seen again by a leading group also containing Marco Pantani and Mauro Gianetti.
However, as Indurain disrupted the chase behind, drama was to strike at the front of the race as Olano flatted inside the final kilometre, with nowhere near enough time for a bike change.
Instead, he rode to the finish line effectively on the rim to write his name into the history books.
