“The pressure isn’t off. There’s a lot to be achieved in this race, but at least I won’t be going home now and regretting anything so far. I’ve got a lot out of it already.”
Tom Stewart, the revelation of this year’s Tour of Britain, did not utter these words yesterday, after his magnificent third-place finish on stage six, gained from riding all day in a break with double stage winner, Matthias Brandle (IAM Cycling) and new race leader, Alex Dowsett (Movistar).
Instead, these were the Yorkshireman’s reflections on stage three, when he rode in a six-man break from Abergavenny.
Stewart is not the only rider from Roger Hammond’s squad to have made an impression on the race. Ian Bibby, Mike Northey and Tom Scully have also featured in eye-catching moves that have gained the Milton Keynes team valuable exposure.
