Tour de France 2014: stage three – five observations

Marcel Kittel proves his quality but Mark Renshaw and Bryan Coquard provide hope

Peter Sagan currently tops the classifications for best young rider and points, trading the white jersey of the former for the green of the latter for stage three.

And already, the Slovakian’s 27-point lead in the points classification looks a commanding one. Marcel Kittel has racked up 90 points despite not contesting the intermediate sprints, but with no desire to chase the jersey he is unlikely to be a threat.

After Kittel is Bryan Coquard (Team Europcar), who has twice finished fourth and also twice won the kick for the remaining intermediate sprint points from the bunch.

The Slovakian rouleur, however, remains the man to beat – and a very difficult man to overcome at that. His ability to compete on the undulating stages – as proven by his fourth place on stage two – marks him as a clear favourite for the jersey.

And having finished second twice, and fourth once, already in three stages and with the flat stage four and cobbled stage five both likely to see him featuring at the sharp end too, the classification could be over as a contest before the peloton even sees its first mountain range.
