UCI WorldTour 2013: seven season-defining moments

Cancellara, right, out-thought and then out-sprinted Vanmarcke in the famous velodrome in Roubaix (Pic: Sirotti)

Fabian Cancellara (Radioshack-Leopard) won his third Paris-Roubaix in April with a brilliant display of riding to show exactly why he is regarded as King of the Classics.

After more than 250km of racing over the harsh cobbles of northern France, the race ultimately came down to a track sprint, where the Swiss star out-thought and ultimately out-sprinted Blanco’s Sep Vanmarcke in the Roubaix velodrome to claim a third victory in the Hell of the North.

A series of well-timed attacks and counter-attacks on the cobbles, and unfortunate collisions with spectators for two rivals, left Cancellara and Vanmarcke alone up the road as they approached the race’s famous finish.

Having already engaged in an enthralling cat-and-mouse chase in the final few kilometres, Cancellara led the pair into the velodrome and appeared second-favourite as they rolled onto the track.

As Vanmarcke dropped down underneath the 32-year-old however, Cancellara sensed his opportunity and patiently sat in behind him.

With the Belgian now unwittingly leading out the sprint,Cancellara chose his moment to pounce to perfection and kicked for the line to take a famous victory.
